Here we are, movement 12 of 12. Lencten, March. As TiLT is a cycle It felt right to return to where I started so this movement is an instrumental arrangement of Something New, the April song. The film is mostly a celebration of daffodils which look all gorgeous and glamorous in the march sunlight. ‘Froth of white Hawthorn I wear a dainty sweet spring crown. In a way December, Midwinter is the beginning of TiLT. I wrote and recorded this song back in 2021 for the Muso Mums Musical Advent Calendar. I composed it whilst walking my beloved dog Woody along the freezing wintery cliff tops in Cromer. The song also became a part of Poppyland Songs; Life On A Cliff Edge and the original recording is on the Poppyland album. It was the following spring that I started to ponder composing my own four seasons. I added the wonderful double bass playing of Justin Myers (who appears on April and June) and tinkered with the original recording for the TiLT album. I’ve added the original film as I really loved it. My Dad had handed me a bag of old Christmas cards suggesting I could do something with them.. TiLT is a song cycle inspired by the seasons. As the celebrations of the end of the calendar year subside we slide into the coldest and longest month. Although technically we have passed the longest night, January always feels dark. A time for rest and contemplation, what came before and what is ahead. The earth is sleeping deeply and dreaming of new life. TiLT is a song cycle inspired by the seasons. ‘APRICITY’ The warmth of the sun in winter. I love snowdrops. They’re like little dreams of spring bubbling up from the earth as the land sleeps in preparation for the big explosion that simultaneously feels like one gust of wind away and yet a hundred years away as we are teased with late winter sunshine followed by cold hard days. I would have liked to have spent longer on this film but my editing app was messing me around and what with February and its shortness I ran out of time as per usual! 😑. I’m getting so close now. NVMBR - the 8th Movement of TiLT. Looking back at the previous 7 movements and the respective films I can track what I was up to through the images I used and this month is no different. I have spent almost everyday of November 2024 on Cromer Pier in the Pavilion Theatre rehearsing and now performing in the Christmas Show. So this film features the pier but with a far darker atmosphere, a violin playing ghostly apparition and a sea monster. NVMBR is all about the stormy seas using field recordings of wind, waves and the ringing of the lamp posts during a storm. TiLT is a song cycle inspired by the seasons. Introducing “Canicular” the 5th movement from TiLT. The Canicular Days are the hottest part of the year- between late July and early September. The creative process on this one was quite different. I took a theme from the previous movement “Lammas” and improvised around it on the piano and then used those recorded improvisations as building blocks to compose with. Then adding electro acoustic production techniques to give it that quivering shimmering heat. I recorded the strings of the piano with the sustain pedal on which gives it that sense of weightlessness to create an auditory mirage. The improvisation was a journey to take the listener from Lammas (mvt 4) to movement 6, “Turning” which will be out in a few weeks. In fact all the movements of TiLT merge into each other to be listened to in one sitting to give a sense of the wheel turning. TiLT is a 12 movement collection with a composition composed and released for each month of the year starting in April 2024. I don’t seem able to hand my work in early.. it’s always at the last moment possible. BUT I have reached the half way point and not missed a deadline yet so yay me! We’ve reached the 6th movement. Autumn. This is called Turning. Celebrating the contradictions of a September day from clear blue skies and hazy fields to huge storms and a gale. You can paint her any number of ways.
